Hygienist
Hygienists offer a professional teeth cleaning service, giving you a deep and professional clean to remove a build up of plaque that may have resulted from missed dental check ups over lockdown.
Why should I visit a hygienist?
Dental hygiene is the cornerstone of good oral health and we actively encourage our patients to visit our dental hygiene therapists on a regular basis. Recent studies have shown that approximately 80% of UK adults suffer from some form of gum disease (periodontitis) and it is one of the most common oral health problems, second only to tooth decay. Seeing a dental hygiene therapist regularly will not only reduce your risk of developing tooth decay and gum disease, it will also ensure that you protect your smile and keep it looking clean and bright.
Can a hygienist check for gum disease?
Our hygienists are trained to look for signs of gum disease during your appointment. If signs are detected they will refer you to a dentist or periodontist for further treatment. However, prevention is always better than a cure and regular hygiene visits are an essential part of preventing gum disease.
What does a hygienist appointment involve?
During the appointment, your hygienist will carry out an initial dental hygiene examination, followed by a scale and polish to remove any plaque or tartar buildup and remove any superficial stains on your teeth.
After your teeth are cleaned your hygienist will offer tailored advice on how to maintain good dental health and demonstrate techniques you can use at home.
How much do hygienist appointments cost?
We offer 20, 30 or 40-minute sessions with the price being dependent on the session length you require and if you would like Air Abrasion. You may be eligible to cover the costs under the Denplan scheme.
What is Air Abrasion?
Air abrasion works through a combination of air, sodium bicarbonate and a jet of water to remove external staining caused by everyday things such as tea, coffee, red wine and smoking. It produces great results without any risk of damage to your teeth. Completely painless, Air Abrasion will significantly improve tooth staining, leaving your mouth clean and fresh after treatment. If you would like to book an Air Abrasion treatment speak to one of our team.
How often should I visit a hygienist?
We recommend visiting a hygiene therapist one or two times a year. However, for patients suffering from gum disease (periodontitis) your dentist/hygiene therapist may recommend a more intensive course of treatment. This involves a number of hygiene appointments over a short period followed by a schedule of regular maintenance appointments to monitor and check your progress. Our Denplan Essentials and Denplan Care payment plans offer a great way to budget for your dental hygiene appointments.
